Fluffy Feeling Ill? N.Y.C. Workers May Get Sick Leave to Care for Pets.

As pet owners, we all know how distressing it can be when our furry friends fall ill. We want to do everything we can to make sure they receive the care and attention they need to get back on their paws as soon as possible. In New York City, there may soon be a new option for pet owners to take time off work to care for their sick pets.

A proposed bill in the New York City Council would allow employees to use their sick leave to care for ailing pets. The bill, known as Int. 1399-2020, would allow workers to use up to four days of their earned sick leave to care for a sick pet. This would be in addition to the existing provisions that allow employees to use sick leave to care for a sick child, spouse, parent, or domestic partner.

The bill is being championed by Council Member Justin Brannan, who is a proud pet owner himself. He believes that pets are members of the family and should be treated as such when they are sick. “If your pet is sick, you should be able to take time off to care for them without fear of losing your job or your paycheck,” Brannan said in a statement.

The bill has garnered support from animal welfare organizations, such as the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States. These organizations argue that allowing employees to take time off to care for sick pets would lead to better outcomes for the animals, as they would receive the care and attention they need to recover.

Opponents of the bill argue that it could lead to abuse, with employees falsely claiming that their pets are sick in order to take time off work. However, supporters of the bill point out that employees would still need to provide documentation from a veterinarian to prove that their pet is indeed ill.

If the bill is passed, New York City would join a growing number of cities and states that have enacted similar legislation. In San Francisco, for example, employees are allowed to use sick leave to care for a sick pet. And in the state of Illinois, employees have the right to take unpaid leave to care for a sick pet under the Illinois Family and Medical Leave Act.

As pet owners, we want to do everything we can to ensure the health and well-being of our furry friends. Allowing employees to take time off work to care for sick pets would be a step in the right direction towards achieving that goal. Let’s hope that the bill is passed and that pet owners in New York City will soon have the option to take time off work to care for their beloved pets.
