In the wake of the 2016 election, many Democrats have been left searching for the perfect message to counter President Trump’s divisive rhetoric and policies. But in reality, what they need more than a perfect message is to show some fight.
Trump has shown time and time again that he is willing to go to great lengths to push his agenda, even if it means disregarding norms, laws, and basic decency. In response, Democrats must be willing to fight back just as fiercely.
One of the biggest criticisms of the Democratic Party in recent years has been their perceived lack of a cohesive message. While it’s true that a clear and concise message is important, it’s equally important for Democrats to show strength and resolve in the face of Trump’s attacks.
This means not backing down when Trump and his allies launch personal attacks or spread lies about Democratic candidates. It means standing up for their values and principles, even when it’s politically unpopular. And it means being willing to take on Trump directly, calling out his bigotry, corruption, and incompetence at every turn.
Democrats also need to show some fight when it comes to policy. Trump has made it clear that he will stop at nothing to push through his agenda, even if it means hurting the most vulnerable members of society. In response, Democrats must be willing to fight just as hard to protect healthcare, civil rights, and the environment.
This doesn’t mean resorting to the same underhanded tactics that Trump employs. It means being willing to stand up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. It means being willing to work across the aisle when possible, but also being willing to stand firm when necessary.
In short, Democrats don’t need a perfect message against Trump. What they need is to show some fight. They need to be willing to stand up to his bullying and lies, to fight for their values and principles, and to show the American people that they are the party of strength and integrity.
It won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight. But if Democrats can show some fight in the face of Trump’s attacks, they just might be able to turn the tide in the next election.
